Ex-Marine killed; Mom, detoured by the accident, didn't know

HALFMOON -- A Mechanicville woman who came upon an emergency roadblock while driving to work Sunday morning didn't know her son lay dead just up the road.
Dennis Doten, 48, was walking home along Route 4 near Willow Ln. when a car veered off the road and struck him at about 3:30 a.m., authorities said. Doten, a military veteran and longtime volunteer firefighter, was pronounced dead at the scene.
"They said I had to detour because there was a bad accident," Judith Doten told NewsChannel 13. "I didn't realize it was my son."
A few hours later, a member of the Saratoga County Sheriff's Department knocked on Judith's door and awoke her sleeping husband to deliver the grim news.
