PTSD on Trial: VA and Air Force Veteran Needing Help

And we should wonder which contractor staffed this clinic for a lot of money instead of VA employees doing it because they love veterans...and usually are veterans.

"He goes to the VA that day, looking for help and they just loaded him up with more pills," Haddad said. "This is a guy who was a major in the Air Force, he has a master's degree. This is a stand-up guy, a highly regarded, trusted retired member of the military who served his country."

Thomas Maffei, 49, a retired Air Force major from Parkland, is charged with attempted first-degree murder in the November 2012 shootings of his estranged wife and her father in Coral Springs. Both victims survived.
Hours before retired U.S. Air Force Major Thomas Maffei shot and seriously injured his estranged wife and her father in Coral Springs, he went to a Veterans Administration crisis clinic in Palm Beach County and told staff he was under extreme stress.

When Maffei goes on trial Monday in Broward Circuit Court on attempted murder and other charges, he won't dispute that he fired three shots through his then-wife's apartment door as she and her father leaned against it, trying to keep him out.

A 92-year-old war veteran is incarcerated for the third time since 2011 for allegedly setting off a violent attack against others, this time his 70-year-old wife.

Joseph Hogan on Friday remained in a Broward County Jail's medical facility after he was arrested on Thursday for allegedly pushing his 70-year-old wife to the ground and shoving her face against the concrete floor outside the couple's home in Hollywood, according to court officials.

He is facing one count of battery on a person older than 65.

Hogan's public defender, W. Dale Miller, said Thursday's incident is the latest in an ongoing saga of a 92-year-old man who appears to be in need of help over his increasingly violent behavior and deteriorating mental health.

Broward County Judge John "Jay" Hurley called the case "unique" and appeared perplexed during a bond court hearing on how to handle the jailing of a man in his 90s who may be suffering from dementia.

"The court is not inclined or comfortable jailing a 92-year-old man," Hurley said. "At the same time, this 92-year-old man now has two felony cases, and I feel that at least in the short term, it seems he's becoming more violent."

Ex-Marine in recovery is Broward's first homicide victim of 2013

Ex-Marine in recovery is Broward's first homicide victim of 2013

FORT LAUDERDALE
A softball-loving ex-Marine in recovery at a halfway house was the victim of Broward County's first homicide of 2013.

Christopher Valli, 46, was shot to death in his apartment at Third Step Recovery, 907 NW Fourth St., about 1:45 p.m. New Year's Day. No arrests have been made.

Valli had been at Third Step less than a month, going there on a referral after completing a 28-day recovery program, said Valli's mother, Karen, 74, of Margate.

"We didn't know what a horrible place it was until it was too late," Karen Valli said.

"Third Step is supposed to be a place of safety for people in recovery."

Third Step did not return calls seeking comment.

"He's bipolar, has PTSD and he medicates with street drugs," Karen Valli said. "But I would really like someone to see him as something other than a recovering addict. There was much more to Chris than that."

Veterans court headed to Broward County Florida, Finally!

Veterans court headed to Broward County, Fla.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — After all these decades, Chief Judge Peter Weinstein still remembers the soldier.

Weinstein had served with him in the Army at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Ga., in the beginning of the 1970s, as the Vietnam War raged overseas. But by the time the soldier was discharged, he was an alcoholic, his rank reduced several levels, his future uncertain. He was, in many ways, the prototype of the kind of veteran the judge now hopes to help with the upcoming Broward County Veteran’s Court: perhaps troubled or misguided, but deserving of help back to a stable life.

“He had such a severe issue with alcohol that he once passed out on duty, and ended up being discharged. I tried to get him help but by that time it was just too late. I can’t imagine what his civilian life was like,” says Weinstein, a former Florida state senator who served as a legal officer in the Army. “I have thought of him often as we planned this court. Someone like him could have benefitted from this kind of program.”
