Conger may be driving a 2015 Toyota Camry with Nevada license plate number 696G03 and is believed to possibly be in Mexico. Smith says there are many families of veterans with PTSD who just need to reach out before it's too late.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - A billionaire and philanthropist from Detroit, Michigan is offering a $10,000 reward to the person who finds a missing combat veteran from Scottsdale.

Scottsdale Police say Jesse Conger was last seen August 14 at his Scottsdale apartment. He is described as a 37-year-old white man, 6'2", 200 pounds, with brown hair, a full beard, and blue eyes. He has tattoos on his left arm and the word "rise" tattooed on his chest.

Conger is a veteran who is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, according to family. Police said he reportedly made suicidal statements in the days leading up to his disappearance.

Bill Pulte, the Chief Executive Officer of Pulte Capital and Blight Authority, offered to help in the search, vowing to give $10,000 in reward money to whoever helps find Conger.

Kendrick Hardaway's eyes dilated when robbers approach him

DETROIT - A Vietnam veteran claims two men robbed him on the front porch of his Detroit home while he was under medication. The good news is everything was recorded on camera.

Kendrick Hardaway has seen a lot over the years, mostly from his front porch. Hardaway sits in the same chair with his best friend beside him. That daily ritual was delayed Friday because Hardaway had a doctor’s appointment to get his eyes dilated.

When he got home, he got out of his car.

“Out of nowhere, two guys popped up, and said, 'Give it up,'” Hardaway said. “It happened in less than two minutes,” Hardaway said.

Detroit police and the mother of an Iraq war veteran slain in a robbery after he returned home in January 2013 are asking anyone who knows who did it to come forward.

U.S. Naval Petty Officer Second Class Terrence Hill, Jr., 24, was shot and killed on Detroit's northwest side, and the shooter fled the scene and hasn't been found.

Hill's mother Julia Spencer, 43, at a press conference specially called on Veterans Day, said she wants justice for her son.

"It's hard, because this is a day when we would call him up... and just say, 'Happy Veterans Day, thank you so much. We love you for being so great,'" she said, adding that instead, "today is a day when we're still trying to get answers."

Hill, who was on leave at the time, was sitting with a 21-year-old woman in a Ford F-150 in the 19100 block of Manor, near 7 Mile, when the gunman and another person approached, ordering Hill out of the vehicle. During the robbery, a struggle ensued and Hill was shot, according to Detroit Police Department.

Vietnam Veteran killed saving granddaughter from thieves

Vietnam Veteran and grandfather dies saving 12-year-old granddaughter from thieves
Detroit Police are still searching for suspects
By: Kim Russell
DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit Police are searching for the thieves who barged into a house full of children, beat a 16-year-old with a baseball bat, then shot and killed a grandfather.

“He jumped in front of a bullet for his 12-year-old granddaughter,” said Melissa Villneff, the daughter of the man killed.

She and her brother Michael Villneff describe their father as a hero. They say 62-year-old John Villneff was a Vietnam Veteran who received two Purple Hearts. He had one son, two daughters, and 12 grandchildren.

He lived next door to his daughter’s house on Rutland on the city’s west side. His adult children were out enjoying a Tigers game. His grandchildren, who are between the ages of 10 and 16 were at home together Wednesday night when young men with guns and a bat came to their home.

Relatives say the young men attacked the 16-year-old, hitting him in the head with a baseball bat. They demanded what was inside a safe at the home. They soon learned the safe contained almost nothing of value. They then stole a Wii and an Xbox.

A 12-year-old girl at the home managed to take pictures of the suspects as they committed their crime. She then ran from the home towards her grandfather’s home next door. He came out to see what was wrong. The war veteran saw armed men coming for her, covered her, and pushed her into the safety of his home as he was shot.

He died at his home.

“I didn’t get to tell him I love him,” said Michael Villneff. “He is a hero.”

VFW reports 4 VA offices involved in document shredding

VA claims found in piles to be shredded

By Rick Maze - Staff writer
Posted : Thursday Oct 16, 2008 16:35:50 EDT

Department of Veterans Affairs regional offices have been ordered to immediately stop shredding documents after an investigation found some benefits claims and supporting documents among piles of papers waiting to be destroyed.

Claims often include personal records supplied by veterans that are not duplicated in government files and might be difficult to replace, such as certificates for births, deaths and marriage.

In a statement, VA Secretary James Peake said only a handful of documents were found among piles of documents set aside to be shredded. But he is not pleased.

“I insist on the highest possible standards for processing and safeguarding information in VA’s custody,” Peake said. “It is unacceptable that documents important to a veteran’s claim for benefits should be misplaced or destroyed.”

Peake said three of VA’s 57 regional offices were involved, without naming them. Veterans of Foreign Wars said they were told four regional offices — in Detroit, St. Louis, St. Petersburg, Fla., and Waco, Texas — were identified as having documents in shredding bins that should not have been there.

VFW National Commander Glen Gardner said the problem could be significant.

“The VA inspector general conducted a routine investigation of Detroit’s mailroom and discovered five documents in the shredder bin, then three pieces are found in St. Louis, two in Waco, and some more in St. Petersburg,” he said. “The question that begs to be asked and answered is how many veterans had their disability and compensation claims disappear down a paper shredder?”
