A South Florida pastor is speaking out after police were forced to fire on a knife-wielding man at his church.

"He was very aggressive," said Luther Memorial Lutheran Church Pastor James Congee. "We have odd things that happen, but not like that."

Pastor Congee has been pastor at the church for nearly a decade and a pastor for more than 30 years and said he has never witnessed a church day like Wednesday's.

"I heard a commotion outside and the janitor came running into the room, and behind him was this fellow with a knife. He was right on top of him," said the Pastor.

Police headed to the New Gethsemane Church of God in Christ about 12:30 p.m. (3:30 p.m. ET), after three hooded men shot at churchgoers, Richmond police spokeswoman Bisa French told CNN.

"We're not sure if those two victims were targeted, but someone definitely in that general area where the victims were, was targeted," French said.

Police are unsure why the church, filled with more than 100 people, was attacked.

No matter what Adkisson uses for an excuse of why he did this, it will never make sense. That's what happens when someone does such an evil act.

Police chief says more might have died without church members' action

(CNN) -- Eric Dixon was watching his daughter act in a church production of the musical "Annie" on Sunday in Knoxville, Tennessee, when paternal pride turned to horror.

"We heard a loud boom. I looked up at my daughter on the stage and she was looking up at the lights and I figured a light blew up or something," Dixon said. "I looked up and then the second shot happened."

The 12-gauge shotgun blasts were the opening rounds of an attack that killed two people at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church.

Six people were wounded by gunfire. A seventh person was injured diving under a pew. Four patients remain hospitalized.

O'Reilly, Savage, Hannity on accused church shooter's reading list

I wonder if they ever understand what their words do to people? The kind of trauma created by their hatred for the people of this church trying to help others was fed by their words.

Jim Adkisson, the 58 year old man being held in a Knoxville, Tennessee jail on murder charges stemming from a shooting during a children's musical at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church on Sunday, is said to have had a array of right-wing political books in his home, along with brass knuckles, empty shotgun shell boxes, and a handgun discovered by police who searched his home.

A report from the local Knoxville news details the findings from Adkisson's home, along with key statements from a document written by Adkisson related to an apparent motive behind the violent attack that rocked the suburban community:

"Adkisson targeted the church, Still wrote in the document obtained by WBIR-TV, Channel 10, 'because of its liberal teachings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country, and that he felt that the Democrats had tied his country's hands in the war on terror and they had ruined every institution in America with the aid of media outlets.'

"Adkisson told Still that 'he could not get to the leaders of the liberal movement that he would then target those that had voted them in to office.'

"Adkisson told officers he left the house unlocked for them because 'he expected to be killed during the assault.'

"Inside the house, officers found 'Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder' by radio talk show host Michael Savage, 'Let Freedom Ring' by talk show host Sean Hannity, and 'The O'Reilly Factor,' by television talk show host Bill O'Reilly."
