RIVIERA BEACH — Edward Alvin couldn’t “come out of nowhere” if he tried, his wife said.

The disabled veteran used a walker due to injuries sustained in a crash years prior. He needed multiple surgeries to his hips, knee and abdomen for him even to be able to do that, Sharell Alvin said.

Edward Michael Alvin, 40, was hit and killed Friday night while walking along Silver Beach Road. The woman accused of hitting him told a passerby that Alvin “came out of nowhere.”

HOLIDAY, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly hit-and-run crash in Pasco County.

Troopers tell us they located a 90-year-old man who is a person of interest along with the minivan they believe was involved in the fatal hit and run. The person of interest lives five blocks away from where 77-year-old Larry Small was hit and killed.

The Florida Highway Patrol responded to a call of a crash involving a pedestrian on a motorized wheelchair and a Dodge minivan just before 12:30 p.m. on Monday.

The incident happened on Moog Road at Pinehurst Drive.

Troopers say Small, of Holiday, was hit by a 1991 Dodge minivan as he entered the intersection. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the minivan drove away after striking Small.

That vehicle has since been seized as evidence.

CHETICAMP, N.S. – A military veteran who died in an alleged hit and run in Cape Breton will be laid to rest Saturday, as a family member questions how he wound up walking on a highway near the hospital where he was receiving treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Ida LeLievre says her cousin, Jackie Deveau, was struck by a car on Highway 125 near Sydney last Saturday, only two days after checking himself into Cape Breton Regional Hospital for psychological care.

The 54-year-old man died in the same hospital a few hours later, according to police.

“For us, I guess the question is … Where did things go wrong?” LeLievre said.

“Where is that crack in the system that makes it so that people like my brother and so many others end up dead, or end up injuring others, before we do anything about it?”

RCMP say the car continued down the highway through the community of Mira Road without stopping. Investigators are looking for the driver of a grey Volkswagen with damage on its front and passenger side.
"...Deveau was diagnosed with PTSD shortly after assisting in the cleanup of Swissair Flight 111, which crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Peggy’s Cove in 1998."

On the morning of New Year's Eve, Iraq war veteran Matthew DeRemer went on Facebook to reflect on a difficult 2015 and outlined his plan to become a better man in the coming year.

The decorated former Marine corporal from St. Petersburg, Florida, had a new job, stronger faith and a renewed drive to help people.

Last day of 2015!!!! For me I'll be meditating through all I do, on this entire year. I've lost, I've gained, family is closer and tougher than ever before, loved ones lost, and new friends found. There has been many times where I've been found on my knees in prayer for hours (relentless) and other times leading a group of people in prayer, my faith (that I love to share) is an everyday awakening (to me) that people, lives, and circumstances can change for the better OVER TIME. I look back at 2015's huge challenges that I've overcome, shared with others, and have once again found myself... To say thank you and BRING ON 2016, much works to be done!

And I really don't know where I'll end up tonight but I do know where I windup is where I'm meant to be.

I sincerely doubt God's plan for this veteran was to be hit by someone and left for dead. Seems more like an amazing person left this life because someone didn't care what else he could have done.
