What happened to John Dees, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq, was found dead?

'Some demons you can’t beat': Man found shot in woods was Iraq war veteran

Kimberly Dees said her family had been looking for him for years. They were dreading the worst.

“He was sick,” she said. “And he was easy to take advantage of because he was sick. He wanted to get better. But there are some demons you can’t beat.”

Military clockwork — if not fate or instant attraction — brought John Dees and Kimberly Crosby together.

They met in 2006 after both were stationed at the Army's Fort Lewis outside Tacoma, Washington. Young and starting out in life, he worked as an air defense early warning system operator; she was a human resources manager. Their names were so close alphabetically that wherever one lined up, the other inevitably would follow.

“Everywhere we went, we were always together,” she said. “I think it kind of skipped friendship and went straight to romance.”

Charming and good-looking, Dees even got her into country music, something she didn’t think possible. The two bonded listening to Brad Paisley’s “Mud on the Tires” together. Three months after meeting, they got married at the courthouse.
About the same time, a woman took him in at her Mission Road apartment in an act of charity. The night of Jan. 9, she called police to report he had become loud and combative, according to TPD records. Officers determined he had residency rights and took no action.

Less than four days later, Dees was found dead, in an area near the apartment. Police declined to discuss a possible motive, citing the ongoing investigation.

James enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 2007 and served one year in Iraq and another year Afghanistan before getting out of the service in 2012. He returned home to Clementon after his tours of duty, with family saying Friday that James suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
.
CLEMENTON -- A borough man and former U.S. Marine who completed tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan hasn't been seen in nearly a week and his family is hoping to find him before his birthday on Saturday.

Lance James, who will be turning 29, was last heard from on Dec. 3, family said, adding that attempts to contact him via cell phone and social media have been unsuccessful.

"No one has seen or heard from him since Saturday. It is not like him to go this long without checking in," sister Jessica Hassan said Friday. "He is a local in the area and hangs out locally. He has not shown up to work and did not call out -- again very unusual for him."

Family said James -- who doesn't own a vehicle and has a 5-year-old daughter who lives with her mother -- went to the Hide-A-Way Tavern, in Clementon, Friday night and returned home afterward.

Body of missing Iraq veteran found in river

Man found in Anacostia River was Iraq war veteran
Washington Post
By Peter Hermann
Published: April 2

He followed his father, a veteran of Vietnam, into the Army, and spent a year fighting in Iraq. Arlester Jay returned home addicted to drugs and alcohol, his father said, and he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. He was homeless for a time, unable to hold even a menial job.

D.C. police pulled Jay’s body from the Anacostia River on Monday after a rower spotted it floating near the Langston Golf Course in Northeast. The discovery ended a nearly four-week search after Jay’s family reported him missing in early March.

For Jay’s father, the gruesome discovery brought one small part of sad relief over a life that had spiraled out of control into petty crime and substance abuse. But it was much more a moment to vent years of pent-up anger at the way he believes veterans are treated after they come home from war.

“That boy gave his all for his country,” said Ernest Jay Jr., a 71-year-old Methodist minister, just hours after learning of his son’s death Tuesday. “And they did nothing.”

It’s a grueling wait for Nathan Dickey’s family and friends as they look to police to solve the Iraq war veteran’s mysterious disappearance.

Dickey’s friends gathered Wednesday evening outside the Brass Pelican near the Huron River, where earlier this week the missing man’s shoe was found in the river.

“He’s an excellent guy,” said Casey Gonzalez, Dickey’s friend from Columbus. “We’re all a tight bunch and we’re just waiting, hoping for the best.”

Gonzalez recalled the last time he saw Dickey — just weeks ago at Cedar Point — and he’s hoping it’s not the last time he’d see his friend alive.

Dickey’s friends reported him missing Sunday evening after a night of drinking at i5’s Bar and Grill in downtown Huron. Dickey was with the group Saturday night, but at 2 a.m. Sunday he wandered off into the early morning darkness.

He was drunk and upset about problems within the group, a police report said.

It’s the last time anyone saw him alive.

New York City police officer was acquitted of beating Iraq Vet

NYPD officer acquitted of assaulting vet

NEW YORK — A New York City police officer was acquitted Monday of assaulting an Iraq war veteran and lying about the confrontation, which was caught on videotape.

David London, 45, sobbed as he heard the jury’s verdict and left the courtroom with tears streaming down his face, hugging supporters.

London’s trial was the second in as many months that offered video to rebut a police officer’s account of a clash with a citizen. In both cases, defense lawyers suggested the videos didn’t provide a full view of the provocation and danger the officers faced.

London, an officer for 16 years, confronted Harvin as the Army veteran walked into his mother’s Manhattan apartment building without a key and declined to provide identification, the officer said.

Harvin didn’t testify at London’s trial. Prosecutors, his lawyer and his mother have said they don’t know where he is. His mother and his lawyer have said Harvin suffers from post-traumatic stress syndrome that deepened after his encounter with London.

POSTED: 11:26 am MST September 10, 2008

PHOENIX -- The search for an Iraq war veteran missing from Globe has ended with the discovery of a body.

Aaron Tierno's body was found Monday, the victim's family said. He had been missing since Aug. 28.

Because his body was found on the San Carlos Indian Reservation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs has opened its own investigation, police said.

Investigators previously said they have evidence that Tierno, 20, was the victim of a robbery. They also have a suspect in the case, but authorities did not release specifics.
