After son died at school, Mom warns others about chocking game

Fort Carson mom believes son died from choking game
FOX 31 Denver

March 22, 2014

FORT CARSON, Colo. — A Fort Carson mom spoke out to say that she believes her son did not commit suicide, but that his death was the result of a choking game played in a middle school bathroom.

Kristina Fields lost her son, Luie, on Valentine’s Day, according to Colorado Springs’ KRDO.

Luie was found after lunch unresponsive in the boy’s bathroom at the Carson Middle School.

“They found him with his belt around his neck,” Kristina told KRDO. “They all think he killed himself, so they all jumped to the conclusion that he was bullied.”

Yet, Kristina said it didn’t make sense to her. She didn’t believe Luie was an unhappy child as he showed no signs of depression.

A week after Luie’s death, Kristina recounted checking the messages on her phone and found one from her son that was an accidental call, a “butt dial.”

While the message was difficult to understand, Kristina told KRDO she could hear Luie talking about a friend choking him.

Updated at 11 a.m. ET: A nurse duped by a prank call made to the hospital where Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, was treated for an extreme form of morning sickness was found dead Friday morning, the hospital said in a statement.

Two Australian DJs, Mel Greig and Michael Christian of Sydney station 2Day FM, pretended to be Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles and were put through to the ward.

They were then given an update on Kate’s health by a nurse.

It wasn't clear what role the nurse found dead Friday played in the incident.

The woman’s body was found at an address in Weymouth Street, London, which is around the corner from King Edward VII Hospital on Beaumont Street. Police described the circumstance of her death as "unexplained."

“It is with very deep sadness that we confirm the tragic death of a member of our nursing staff, Jacintha Saldanha,” said the statement, which was released by the hospital's public relations firm.

New Jersey suicide victim was an Army veteran, outdoorsman

Franklin suicide victim was an Army veteran, outdoorsman

December 1, 2012

FRANKLIN — With much public attention on Michael John Elekes' final tragic hours, his survivors sought to portray a fuller picture of his life in an obituary released to the media Nov. 30.

Elekes, 53, fatally shot himself Nov. 19 inside the Auche Drive home he shared with his parents, hours after shooting his mother, who survived, and holding his father hostage.

Following a private memorial service — the date was not disclosed — his family offered some insights into the lifelong Franklin resident, grandfather, U.S. Army veteran, heavy equipment operator and accomplished outdoorsman.

Michael Elekes, in 1991, donated a kidney to his elder brother, James, who has diabetes.

Several years later, he organized a blood drive when James required open-heart surgery, "offering to donate vascular material should it be required for James to complete successful surgery," according to the obituary prepared by his family and released Friday by F. John Ramsey Funeral Home in Franklin.

The Sussex County Prosecutor's Office has not disclosed a motive in connection with the standoff at 30 Auche Drive, which lasted for more than seven hours and drew approximately 70 law enforcement officers.

Anna Elekes, 77, was wounded in the abdomen and leg — possibly with birdshot, according to Franklin Police Detective Nevin Mattessich — upon fleeing the house when three Franklin police officers pulled up outside her home around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18.

She had called 9-1-1 to report her son was threatening her with a shotgun.

Elekes, at some point during a seven-hour standoff, released his 79-year-old father, James.

A decorated reserve Navy chaplain who served with Marines and soldiers in Iraq in 2007 died of an apparent suicide Sept. 10, according to police.

Cmdr. Dennis J. Rocheford, 60, a Catholic priest and former enlisted Marine, jumped to his death from the Newport Bridge in Rhode Island, according to Capt. James Swanberg, with the Rhode Island State Police.

Swanberg said the police were called at 8 a.m. with the report of a parked car in the bridge’s center lane.

“When the officer arrived on the scene, he went to the side of the bridge, looked over and saw a body face down in the water,” Swanberg said.

Coast Guard and fire units pulled the body from the water and unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate him. Rocheford was later pronounced dead at Newport Hospital, Swanberg said, adding that he had not received results of the autopsy as of Tuesday.

He said a witness saw Rocheford walk from his car to the edge of the bridge and look over, but did not see him jump.

At the time of his death, Rocheford was on medical leave from St. Anne’s parish in North Oxford, Mass. He was also serving as a Catholic chaplain at Naval Station Newport, said Ray Deslile, spokesman for the Diocese of Worchester where Rocheford was assigned.
Rocheford served as an enlisted Marine from 1966 until 1969, when he got out as a lance corporal. A Vietnam veteran, he deployed to Quang Tri Province.

Personnel records show he earned a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. He was also twice awarded the Combat Action Ribbon along with the Navy and Marine Corps and Army Commendation Medals.
