“It’s okay to not be okay…”

I'm Listening
EXCLUSIVE: Michael Phelps’ Full #ImListening Interview
“It’s okay to not be okay…”

SEPTEMBER 9, 2018

The world’s most decorated Olympian, Michael Phelps, opens up about his vulnerability, swimming as an escape, and how therapy changed his life - in this exclusive interview:
“While I had a lot of success in the swimming pool, I also struggled with anxiety and depression so I understand how difficult it can be for people to address mental health challenges,” says Phelps. “In sharing my own journey, I would like to help people understand that it’s okay to not be okay, and that asking for help isn’t a sign a weakness but rather a sign of strength and courage.”

Phelps recently announced a partnership with Talkspace, which helps connect anyone with therapists through a computer, tablet or smartphone. “I was scared to go in somewhere and be judged,” says Michael. Talkspace helps break the barriers – especially for those who are reluctant to seek-out help in person, or may not have the financial means. “Every day is not going to be perfect,” he explains, “but it gives me tools to help work through things.”

“Saving a life is much more important to me than winning a gold medal,” Michael concludes. “You are not alone.”

Sunny 105.9 Paco Lopez Not Ashamed of National Anthem

Paco Lopez has been playing Whitney Houston singing the Star Spangled Banner everyday at noon.  This is in response to some athletes deciding they would rather sit or kneel instead of acknowledging while this nation is not perfect, some are risking their lives everyday because it is even worth dying for.
This is Paco at the opening of Rock and Brews in Oviedo. Paco is a Marine, you know because "once a Marine always a Marine" and he's the one remembering our veterans at the VA.

The coolest thing is, he plays some of the calls coming in thanking him for doing it.

Today someone called in and said that he was in his garage working, stopped, put his hand over his heart when his neighbor was walking his dog, stopped to ask him what he was doing.  When he told him, the man stopped, put his hand over his heart and the dog sat down.

So if you want to turn to Sunny 105.9 at noon on Monday. I look forward to it now especially when I think of the price paid by those serving today and those carrying the weight of their service from before so guys and make millions playing a game and sit it out. Oh, by the way, according to Forbes it looks like a lot more Americans think this country is worth taking a few minutes to honor.

Among the annals of national anthems as a prelude to sporting events, few have topped the one delivered by Whitney Houston before Super Bowl XXV in 1991 in Tampa. A woman, her incredible voice and the bare minimum of extraneous notes. Her rendition came at a particularly patriotic time, just after the onset of the Persian Gulf War, and was released as a single. It was re-released after the September 11th terrorist attacks. Houston donated all proceeds to charity. She ranks among the best of all-time because of the circumstances and ... that voice..

Wounded Times Loves Sunny FM Paco Lopez Even More

Wounded Times Loves Paco Lopez and Sunny FM even more now!

Days start rough for me and very early. I'm up about 4:45 am during the week to get some emails read and a few posts up before heading to work.

I'm usually there by 6:30 and I have Rick Stacy along with Grace starting my day off with great music and Ricky Stacy's sense of humor. I laugh so hard listening on my head phones co-workers are listening too.

Then Grace does office party until 10:00, when I am usually doing a chair dance. Right after Grace comes Paco Lopez. He makes me smile every day because he remembers veterans with an on-air shout out for the Orlando VA.

I emailed Paco through Facebook and asked for his story so I could return the favor and give a shout out to him.

Sunny 105.9 Paco Lopez Remembers Veterans Everyday! I listen to Sunny 105.9 FM everyday and one of my favorite things happens during the Paco Lopez show. He plays a song , usually the Eagles Hotel California, and dedicates it to the veterans at the VA everyday. He always makes me smile when he does it because I know how much it means to them to be remembered. It means even more because it comes from one of their own. Paco was a Marine. Or should I say is a Marine? Considering the saying goes, "Once A Marine, Always A Marine."
Well, today, he didn't make me smile. He made me cry. He said he felt humbled to be mentioned by Wounded Times. You can read it here.

Noah Galloway: A Real American Hero (And Great Dancer Too)

April 9, 2015

I spent four years in the United States Marine Corps, serving my country. Though I never saw any battlefield action, I recognized that I could have been called onto the battlefield at any time. I intentionally, and quite voluntarily, enlisted during a very tense period in history. It was when the Ayatollah Khomeini had taken 52 hostages and held them for 444 days.

During boot camp, our drill instructors came in on several occasions and told us to pack our gear because we were going to Iran. We believed them, and so we did…only to be told 30 minutes later that our orders had been cancelled. Our hearts were pounding while we stood there on “line” waiting for our next command from our leaders. Later we learned those were only head games they played with us.

All the more reason, that as a Marine vet, I can appreciate what Noah Galloway did, and even more impressively, what he continues to do to amaze us.

I asked Paco to give a bit of his background so that veterans would know why they matter so much to him. This is what he wrote back.
"I went to Paris Island in Dec of 1979 and served for 4 years at EdCtrCo, H and S Bn, MCDEC, Quantico, Va. Also, I was on the Quantico Ceremonial Squad and did many burials, grand openings, special events, and presented colors for MCDEC.

Meritoriously promoted to PFC by recruiting two into service after boot camp as a recruiters asst while awaiting my due date in MOS school. Meritoriously promoted to LCpl by graduating 1st in my class at MOS school. Meritoriously promoted to Cpl by 9 months for performance. I was an SRB Chief when I left. Rifle Expert 2nd award, 1st class PFT, 3rd class swim qual. EAS'd as an E-5/Sgt. in 1984."
